Barry
Dudley (MBA {IT};
MSc {Image Analysis};
BSc {Brewing};
BSc Hons {Waste Technology}) is MD
of I-CUBE and technical director of Sure
Park Systems. I-CUBE focuses exclusively on integrated,
intelligent imaging,
where a camera is connected to a
PC and intelligently performs a decision
based on information within an image, completely integrated into the existing
processes. Currently the I-CUBE product line consists of image analysis
(counting and sizing), facial identification and verification and License
Plate
Recognition. Sure
Park Systems, an innovative electronic solution provider
of License Plate Recognition for parking management and Automatic Speed
Determination was established in 1999 as a Black Economic Empowerment
company.
Before starting I-Cube in 2003,
Barry was with Intervid for over 3 years, a digital imaging solutions company,
as development manager. Intervid creates a world where digital images are
converted into information and instantly analysed, triggering full scale alerts
in accordance with best practice criteri
a, agreed long before a crisis arises.
Intervid’s digital visual management systems have revolutionized standards and
procedures in surveillance security, safety, change monitoring and production.
Studying
for a MBA (University of Natal, 2003) has
increased Barry’s understanding of
the cycle of business development as viewed from an imaging aspect, which
focuses on the application of digital imaging solutions within specific
industries. Barry now utilises his
experience in digital video recorders (real time applications), biometrics,
(face and iris recognition)
, license plate recognition and machine vision
(image analysis), in creating custom
security and process solutions. Barry
combines his MBA experience with knowledge of technical security solutions to
create customised client solutions.
Barry joined Intervid from the USA, starting out with the R&D
department, moving then to sales, customer relations and my last position was
with Intervid International as a demonstration specialist. This consists of meeting the prospective
clients, listening to their security challenges and linking that with live
examples to Intervid’s wide range of imaging solutions.
Prior to being head hunted to Intervid Barry worked as an Imaging
consultant for 2 years at Integrated Imaging Inc. (I-CUBE), a small technology
company (5 employees) with gross annual revenues ju
st over $1 million, based
out of Maryland (near Washington, DC), USA.
I-Cube specializes in computer image analysis and processing, especially
for scientific and industrial applications such as microscopy, industrial
inspection, security, providing integrated computer hardware and software.
Before going to the US and into his chosen field of image
anal
ysis Barry
took a break from his studies and worked for 2 year at one of the top game
lodges in the world, Mala Mala Game Reserve.
This developed his communication skills and his love for nature. Barry was a ranger for a year, interacting
with people from all over the world, and then became a manager for a year of
first Harry’s, then Kirkman’s Kamps (with staff compliments of 15 and 25
people).
Barry attended the University of Natal,
Pietermaritzburg, completing a
M.S. thesis (Cum Lauda) in Microbiology (April 1999). Barry has been fortunate to be awarded multiple awards /
bursaries & scholarships, of which the most influential was a bursary (R50
000) from South African Breweries (SAB) (1988 - 1990), as it had a working
component which enabled him to combine realistic and pertinent work experience
while still being at university.

| Police foil cash-in-transit heist |
|
By Stephanie Saville and Proffesor Ndawonde
Seven men have been arrested after their attempts to make off
with the proceeds of a cash-in-transit heist were scuppered by
the police, who chanced upon the incident on the N11 in northern
KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.
And in Durban, two men were arrested after robbing a butchery in
the Davenport shopping centre in Glenwood
Superintendent Phindile Radebe said the Coin Security van had
been travelling on the road between Ladysmith and Newcastle at
Elandslaagte when it was forced off the road by armed robbers
driving a Mercedes-Benz.
The van overturned and the two security guards inside were
injured.

cash-in-transit trial |

The 26 members of an alleged cash-in-transit heist
gang, who were arrested at Mvoti Toll Plaza in October
2006, have been "provisionally indicted" to
stand trial in the high court on 31 charges including
murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, theft and
kidnapping.
The "draft" indictment detailing the charges
and a summary of facts was handed to the men when they
appeared under heavy armed guard in the Durban regional
court on Friday.
They are due to appear in the Durban High Court on July
23 for their legal representatives to formally place
themselves on record for the mammoth trial, which has
been set down from October 15 to December 14, 2007 -
about 45 court days.
The venue for the trial has not yet been decided.
Because of the number of accused and legal
representatives, prosecutors are seeking the biggest
courtroom in the province. It is believed that the
Pietermaritzburg High Court is an option, as is the
newly renovated court in Pongola.
The summary of facts on which the state bases the
charges alleges that the 26 men and "certain other
persons" had conspired to form a syndicate to rob
cash vehicles.
Realising that they might have to use force to overcome
resistance or make good their escape, they had armed
themselves with firearms and familiarised themselves
with the routes taken by the cash vans.
In the four months preceding the day of the crimes, the
men stole five vehicles - a Mercedes-Benz, two BMWs and
two bakkies - to ram the vans.
It is alleged that on the morning of October 2, 2006,
the armed men congregated at the Richards Bay home of
accused number 24, taxi owner Mbuso Mncube, where they
fine-tuned their plans.
Later they accosted a Fidelity van and rammed into it
with a BMW, causing it to overturn.
Several shots were fired but their attempts to cut open
the cash vehicle to get the money failed.
They then accosted another Fidelity van, ramming into it
with the Mercedes, and made off with R1,6-million, a
revolver and a rifle.
As they were fleeing that scene they opened fire on five
police officer who had arrived to investigate.
They then stopped another car which was driving past,
using guns to force the three occupants to lie on their
stomachs and demanded the keys. Later they hijacked
another car, robbing the driver and then driving off
with his daughter still inside. They later abandoned the
car.
It is alleged that they opened fire on a Maxim Security
vehicle near KwaMbonambi later that day, killing
security guard Thembinkosi Gumede.
The state alleges that the gang then returned to
Mncube's home to divide the money. They were arrested at
the toll plaza later that evening as they left
KwaZulu-Natal.
The indictment lists 49 witnesses and notes that the
names of some have been withheld in terms of the
Criminal Procedure Act.
