Loop 49 Will Not Have Toll Booths

The new toll road set to ease Tyler traffic congestion will not have toll booths. The first section of Loop 49, between State Highway 155 and US 69 will open next month. Once open, there will be two ways to pay for using the new loop. You can purchase a TxTAG or allow the video tolling system to read your license plate and then send you a bill at the end of the month. 

"This is really taking a lot of the human element out of it. There is no toll booth really it is just an electronic system that finds your registration and sends you a bill at the end of the month and charges you an administration fee for the process and the postage," says Larry Krantz with TXDOT.

Without a TxTAG, the toll could cost between 75-cents to a dollar and then an additional administration charge which may be around one dollar. The toll with a TxTAG is expected to be around 50 to 75-cents. Loop 49 will open next month but tolling will not begin until November.
