Traffic fine SMS service offers motorists peace of mind
Following disturbing stories of motorists being
arrested on the spot for outstanding traffic fines, a new service enables
motorists to check if they have outstanding fines by sending an SMS with their
vehicle's registration number to 35040. The cost is R3 per SMS.
Mobile solutions company CellSmart Technologies and Belstow Traffic Solutions
(BTS) have enabled motorists in all provinces except Gauteng, Northern Cape
and KwaZulu-Natal to access a database of traffic fines issued by provincial
traffic and municipal departments. The BTS database currently has almost two
million oustanding fines loaded.
"This new service will offer motorists peace of mind knowing that they
have nothing to worry about when pulled over by traffic officials checking for
motorists with unpaid fines," said Ahmed Kajee, Sales and Marketing
Director for CellSmart Technologies.
Motorists in Gauteng, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal will be able to check
their outstanding traffic fines by December 2004.
CellSmart Technologies' partner in the traffic fine SMS service is Belstow
Traffic Solutions. This South African company already helps local authorities
identify stolen vehicles and vehicles with outstanding fines through the use
of license place recognition technology.
"We have found that a culture of traffic fine payment does indeed exist
in South Africa, but many motorists simply don't know to which local authority
they owe money," said Mr Pieter Du Plooy of BTS.
Studies show that the government loses some R4 billion annually due to the
non-payment of traffic fines. BTS believes that the convenience of the
company's traffic fine SMS service will mean increased payment of traffic
fines and therefore more investment by the government in road infrastructure.
All South African cellular users will be able to access the service, except
Cell C customers, pending the imminent launch of Cell C's premium billing
facility.
Updates regarding the roll-out of the traffic fine SMS service to other
provinces will be available on www.cellsmart.co.za/main/35040.php
