XID Technologies,
which made its name developing biometric face recognition solutions
for the enterprise security space, is now taking its face processing
technology into the consumer and entertainment markets.
One of its first
offerings is a 3D screensaver which incorporates real-time images
captured by a web cam, and which can be “unlocked” using face
recognition technology instead of a password.
To “enroll” the
face, the user simply looks into the web cam and about five images are
then captured. Subsequently, to unlock the screensaver, the user looks
into the web cam and the face recognition technology kicks in to
“recognise” the face and grant access if there is a match.
According to XID, the
core face recognition technology, known as Predictive Face Synthesis,
overcomes the problems associated with a conventional systems’
sensitivity to lighting conditions, facial poses and facial artifacts
such as glasses. This enables systems based on Predictive Face
Synthesis to function in uncontrolled environments. From one 2D image,
the technology automatically produces a multitude of images to enrich
the reference information available for any face recognition engine.
The 3D screensaver
will be available from early February, when it makes its debut as a
value added software bundled with the Snappy web cam from Thakral
subsidiary Digital Info Technology (DiT). For a start, the web cam
will feature three screensaver options – Video Cube, Living Room
(left) and Video Plane.
According to XID’s
director Myles Kendrick, value added software such as the 3D
screensaver will enable products such as the web camera to compete on
other features instead of just megapixels.
XID is also extending
its face recognition technology to enable real faces to be used as
“emoticons” which can be sent via email or MMS. The technology
captures several points on the face and applies a 3D mesh, allowing
the features to be tracked even when the face is being rotated away
from the camera. Pre-set animation sequences will morph the face so
that it shows the required emotion and the sequence can then be saved
as a .avi file.
According to Kendrick,
users will be able to capture an image via their mobile phone, forward
it to a backend server for the .avi file to be created, and the image
or video sequence is then sent back to the user’s mobile phone.
The combination of
expertise in the areas of computer vision and computer graphics puts
XID in a strong position to take on the entertainment market.
Potential clients include gaming companies, mobile content providers
and video post production companies. “It is a much faster moving
space compared with security – all you need is a web cam,” said
Kendrick. “This is just the beginning”.
