Face recognition software on 3G handset

Neven Vision announced its biometrics face recognition software has been adopted by NTT DoCoMo to enhance the privacy and security of personal data and transactions on cellphones.

Neven's software enables automated authorisation of cellphone users by comparing registered facial images with the face captured by phone's camera, reports 3G.co.uk.

The NTT DoCoMo application is based on Neven Vision's patented facial recognition technology, which is uniquely designed to work within mobile devices without having to communicate with a central server system.

Full-colour fingerprints enhance security

In the future, law enforcement officials may take full-colour fingerprints using new technology developed by a University of Toronto-led team of international researchers.

Far from the basic black-and-white fingerprints collected today, the new technology would use elastic photonic crystals to capture data-rich fingerprints in multiple colours, but the fingerprinting technique is just one potential application for the new technology.

According to CCNmag.com, a paper on the new research is featured on the cover of the current issue of the journal Nature Materials.

Biometric, identity management authentication combined

Secured Services and Fujitsu Computer Products of America, a supplier of computer products including hard-disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, have successfully certified the Fujitsu PalmSecure biometric authentication device for SecuredUser, an identity management solution offering multifactor authentication, single sign-on and provisioning.

Fujitsu PalmSecure has been the recipient of numerous accolades since it was launched in June 2005, including the 2005 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award for Network Security and the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show "Best of Innovations" Award for Biometrics.

Leveraging more than 20 years of image recognition and processing expertise, Fujitsu developed PalmSecure to address the growing demand for a highly accurate, user-friendly biometric security solution, the company says in a press release.
