How many more of our kids must die like this?

August 26, 2005

More people die on South African roads each year than in a major armed conflict yet the government doesn't recognise this as a national crisis that requires extraordinarily urgent action.

We have money-making camera speed traps that need litte human intervention so let unlicensed and drunk drivers and unroadworthy vehicles go punished, corrupt licensing operations for vehicles and drivers - a recent report says probably half of the nation's drivers don't have a legal driving licence! - and thousands of vehicles that would be instantly impounded in any First World country.

  • Yet, while the government fiddles, thousands of people continue to be killed - like the kids who died in Cape Town on Thursday, allegedly because the brakes failed on the bus carrying them

While the government fiddles, thousands of people continue to be...
    .

  • Yet, according to the Committee for Active Road Safety*, we have under-trained, under-paid and untrustworthy traffic cops and a government that really doesn't give a hoot.

"The only solution is to address fundamental issues before embarking on lofty, high-tech schemes to bring about a new, safe road situation," says CARS' Ian Auret.

"We need a road safety ministry to drive and be accountable for a national road safety programme - one that must rank in importance with defence, safety and security, finance and health.

"Pedestrian education should start at junior school and driver training should involve much more than just knowing road signs and being able to steer

...killed - like the kids who died in Cape Town on Thursday, allegedly because the brakes failed on the bus carrying them
    .

"We must ensure that all vehicles are safe and present no threat to anybody or anything - buses, trucks, horse-dawn carts, bicycles, motorcycles and cars.

"It's no good having a 120km/h speed limit if a large proportion of our vehicles are not safe at 60km/h."

Auret adds that danger spots must be identified and that route marking are clear and visible - along with lane markings, particulaly solid white lines that, in many parts of the country, are almost invisible in daylight and invisible at night and in rain.

*CARS, sponsored by Bridgestone, is made up of journalists from the print and electronic media and representatives from key organisations involved in road safety that encourages safe driving habits and the wider use of road-safety material in all branches of the media.
Put honest men, in fast cars, back on the prowl

Transport department spokeswoman Wendy Watson believes more than half of all drivers in South Africa have forged licences or licences issued against forged licences from other African states.

More than 15 000 people die on our roads every year. Ergo: fake licences kill people.

Wrong. Bad driving, careless driving, arrogant driving, selfish driving, simple plain bloody stupid driving - and hideously unroadworthy vehicles - kill people and none of the above has a darn thing to do with whether the licence in your wallet was earned or bought.

A (legal) driving licence merely shows you've had some training and passed a prescribed test on the open road. Better than nothing, at best… but now you have a licence you can get out on the road and do what the hell you want – you're legal, hey!.

No, what's killing people is the lack of mobile enforcement – cops on the road. Every day I see a couple of dozen unroadworthy vehicles, so must every traffic cop in the land, but they do zip.

Get properly trained, intelligent, well-paid (and therefore bribe-proof) cops out there in fast cars to prowl the city streets.

And what about the R50 000 "trade-in" to get taxi death traps off the roads? Our leaders are PAYING criminals to stop breaking the law!
  • AVERAGE SPEED VIOLATION DETERMINATION

The system can also be connected to roadside Traffic signs that can alert the drivers in real time on their speeding violation.

AVERAGE SPEED VIOLATION DETERMINATION LPR-based speed measurement system has several advantages over other techniques: the violation detection is not based on a singular point (as most other methods do) but rather on the length of the route, so it slows down the traffic along the entire route rather than in specific points which are quickly known to drivers.
