SONY IS WATCHING YOU

New SpyToy gets face recognition and full-on surveillance capabilities

16:29 Not that we condone voyeurism of any nature, of course, but we have to admit the Sony SpyToy is sounding like one nifty contraption.

The EyeToy successor is being touted as both a game and a 'state of the art security system' by its Sony manufacturer, building on the surveillance concept introduced in EyeToy: Play 2.

On the one hand it can be used to monitor rooms, issuing warnings when trespassers violate its barriers. On the other, it invites gamesplayers to track criminals as part of a fictional spy network.

Both modes promise to bring a range of technologies into the fray. Up to 10 peoples' mugs can be recognised as part of its Face Recognition facility, post-recording allows you to edit material and secret video messages can be sent to mates.

There are also zoom, alarm zone, night vision, image improvement and customisation options in the surveillance mode, plus the games section features eight types of play including Sky Diving, Code Breaking, Nanotech and Photo Fitting, all played via a mix of 'on screen' and avatar action. We're intrigued. Very intrigued.

The SpyToy releases in October for PS2.
