New etag tolling system to launch post-2010 - Sanral
<-CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE  <-KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT  <-CURRENT AFFAIRS  <-GENERAL ITS NEWS

A pilot study on a new electronic tolling system (etag), expected to be rolled out countrywide after the 2010 soccer World Cup, is scheduled to take place in September, South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) spokesperson revealed on Friday.

A chip containing the relevant details would be attached to the car registration disc and displayed on the car windscreen.

The pilot system would be run along the N3 Marionnhill, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The system was already in use by the Bakwena toll concessionaires, which managed a section of the N1 north of Pretoria, Sanral regional manager for the northern region Ismail Essa said on Friday.

After the 2010 event, the system was expected to be rolled out initially in Gauteng and then “more slowly around the country”.

Vehicle owners would not have to shell out extra for etag, Essa said, explaining that “it would pay for itself” as it would replace staff costs at the toll gantries.

Etag would be available in prepaid and post-paid options.

The prepaid option would be particularly beneficial to tourists and holiday-makers.

The challenge, however, would be determining the distribution of funds to the different concessionaires, Essa explained, however, the issue would be dealt with before the project was rolled out.

Meanwhile, government was expecting to roll out the administrative adjudication on road traffic offences (AARTO), which would take “fines out of the ambit of the court to a fine collection agency” by September Sanral spokesperson Wendy Watson said.

The AARTO pilot project was expected to make fine collection more efficient.
