AVERAGE
SPEED VIOLATION DETERMINATION
LPR-based speed measurement system has several advantages
over other techniques: the violation detection is not
based on a singular point (as most other methods do) but
rather on the length of the route, so it slows down the
traffic along the entire route rather than in
specific points which are quickly known to drivers.

Dr Kevin Meyer from I-CUBE
will be presenting on "Face Recognition as applied to tourists to
the US - A 50/50 approach." The biometric
screening of foreign visitors at U.S. airports, announced
with much fanfare by U.S. Security Czar Tom Ridge, is a
good example of both a first-class and inopportune use of
Face Recognition. I-Cube senior software developer,
Dr. Kevin Meyer, will introduce the topic via a review of
13 biometric exclusion techniques, and with practical
examples and live demonstrations, he will expand on
how the Americans could be implementing biometric face
recognition, successfully and not so successfully, at
borders. You cannot afford to miss this cutting edge
presentation!

I-Cube
launches biometric solutions |
| BY
STEPHEN
WHITFORD,
ITWEB JOURNALIST
12 February 2004 |
| [Johannesburg,
12 February 2004] -
Durban-based start-up I-Cube,
which launched in January, is gearing up to go to market
with “affordable” face and licence plate recognition
solutions.
I-Cube MD Barry Dudley says the company aims to provide
a one-stop solution that is affordable and easy to use.
“The problem with biometric solutions is that in order
to make a positive identification, one has to purchase
very expensive technology. We are therefore providing an
affordable face recognition solution to assist security
staff in identifying people,” he says.
The system can be used at casinos, sports stadiums or
stores where security guards need to make a positive
identification, Dudley says. Using the solution, clients
are able to build up a database of people and if security
staff are suspicious of one of the people passing
checkpoints, the picture taken can be matched by the
camera to a database.
“The software allows the user to narrow down the
search by entering criteria including age, race, hair
colour, size and gender into the system. It then provides
the user with a number of possibilities and the staff can
see if there is a match between the person in question and
the people listed on the database,” he says.
If a company cannot afford the system, Dudley says
companies can opt to rent a database on I-Cube servers and
access it via e-mail. The user then e-mails the photograph
through to I-Cube with the criteria and an automated
response is generated and e–mailed back to the users.
Dudley says the licence plate recognition could be used
at toll gates to search for motorists with warrants
against their names or to monitor toll gate card users as
well as for companies wanting to manage their vehicle
fleets.
He says I-Cube will launch its solutions at the trade
only security exhibition at Gallagher Estate on 18 and 19
of February.
The exhibition will also showcase a range of
technology, including electronics, CCTV cameras and
logistics and security software. |

| Problem
Gamblers to be removed with Biometrics

South
Africa casinos (which contributed over 34 BILLION RAND in the
last 2 years to the GDP) are reviewing a local face recognition
product, which promises to assist in removing problem gamblers.
Problem gamblers in South Africa make up over 5% of all
gamblers, one of the highest in the world.

| IT companies are best suited to sell Security Solutions
So says Barry
T. Dudley, head of the newly established Integrated, Intelligent

for short).

Traditional
CCTV companies are not positioned to take advantage of the
convergence of the IT and Security fields.
IT companies have the experience in PC products, the
right infrastructure to advise, quote, install, maintain,
upgrade and support the new security products.
IT companies should be expanding their product lines, now, on
the verge of the IT recover, which is starting in the UK and the
US. Dudley says a
good place to start would be with his products, FACE
RECOGNITION and LICENSE
PLATE RECOGNITION, which have traditionally been the
forte of large security concerns.
Both of these primarily concern PC’s with specialized
software, which just happen to be connecting to cameras and
responding to security aspects, possibly in the casino, mining,
retail, sporting or mid sized company.
I-Cube
is actively seeking IT companies to distribute, install and
support its products.
